Sophia Marguerite Boeschoten

Sophia (Utrecht 1984) lives and works in The Hague. As a child she believed to descend from another world and practised her own religion. The landscapes of this parallel world are still the main inspiration for her artistry. By using different media (i.a. painting, sculpture, video, music, poetry and performance) Sophia creates installations and musical performances that together portray a magical dream world, but alone function as autonomous art works.

Together with monks Sophia took art classes in icon painting during her two year residence in Georgia (2010 - 2011). The strict lessons on Georgian collor theory and detail painting still define the religious and magic elements within her work. Since graduating from the Royal Academy of The Hague in 2016 Sophia has exhibited in different galleries, i.a. Galerie Frank Taal (2020), De Aanschouw (2021), Neck of the Woods III (2023) and HOK Gallery (2023). In 2020 and 2021 she takes part in different international artist-in-residencies to focus on her conceptual research.

The last years Sophia has been working on a comprehensive theatrical music performance Kill Me, which reflects on the inner war(s) we conduct with ourselves. Kill Me consists of several musical performances that integrate visual arts, theatre and music in one art work.
